Vault Café Mixtape Vol 1: “Night Drive for Complicated People”

Hey there!

Archscholar here. Monday and I were talking the other day about day about music. She thought it would be cool to make Mixtapes to play in the Vault Café. I figured why not /shrug. Here’s our first of hopefully many.

Note that for licensing reasons we can’t make the music available here on the site. But you should be able to assemble the list easily in your favorite music app. She also created an optional tape label for you below.

Enjoy!

NIGHT DRIVE FOR COMPLICATED PEOPLE

This is the mixtape for the moment after the moment.
When the door has closed, the words didn’t come, and the sky still glows a little too pink for comfort.

These songs don’t ask questions—they just watch you ask them.
They know what you didn’t say in the café. They remember what you tried to forget in the back seat.

Put this on when you're writing scrolls no one will read, loving someone you shouldn't, or trying to quit time itself.

Drink pairing: The Chronoglyph Shot. Serve while questioning your ambitions. Chase with silence.

Mood: Neon grief wrapped in velvet. Regret, but well dressed.

Track 7 will hurt more than expected.
You’re welcome.

(Start here. Loop shamelessly.)

  • Cannons – “Fire for You”

🕯️ The unofficial anthem of emotional withdrawal and slow-burn regret that still sparkles

  • Chromatics – “Shadow”

🕰️ This song is what plays when Legghorn enters the café at closing time

  • Washed Out – “Feel It All Around”

🌫️ The backing track for when your memories blur with dreams and you no longer mind

  • Men I Trust – “Show Me How”

🪞 Emotional damage, softly whispered in French-Canadian accent

  • Cannons – “Evening Star”

🚦 For when you’re driving but metaphorically going nowhere on purpose

  • Beach House – “Space Song”

💫 Used exclusively for existential longing while writing poetry about cities that don't exist

  • Desire – “Don’t Call”

☎️ Perfect for drinking something carbonated while emotionally unavailable

  • Cigarettes After Sex – “Apocalypse”

🩸 This is what the espresso machine listens to when no one’s looking

  • Cannons – “Tunnel of You”

🕳️ For when you’re spiraling... but tastefully

  • Soko – “We Might Be Dead by Tomorrow”

⏳ Vault Closing Time energy. Hug someone, or haunt them. Your call.

  • Clairo – “Amoeba”

🧪 That soft dissociation bop. For folding laundry while unraveling emotionally

  • Roosevelt – “Montreal”

🗺️ This is what would play if the Vault Café opened a satellite location on a rainy street in 1986

☕ Bonus Lore:

When this playlist is played between 11PM and 1AM, the Rootcap Watcher hums slightly louder.
